Jim McDaniel

I lived most of my life in the central Valley of California, but when I was 9 years old my family moved to a fairly remote area of central Oregon where we (well mostly my dad) built and operated all of our household support systems. I think this time gave me my great appreciation for the beauty and adventure of the outdoors as well as a sense for and desire to live minimally. After relocating back to CA, graduating from high school, and a short stint as a police officer, I went to work for a large food manufacturing company where I sold most of the next 30 years. Along the way I did a lot of trail running, back packing, marathoning, and sailing, had my daughter Mackenzie, and got a chance to do a fair amount traveling around. The pivotal point in my life is when I met Sherry. It did not take long for us to decide that after 20 years of working we were ready for a break. I took "first retirement" at 40 years old. We found Bailarina (A Westsail 32 that needed us as much as we needed her) and made her our sailing/marina home for the next 4 years. After an extensive refit and shake down sailing in the SanFrancisco bay, we were out the gate off to the warmer waters of Mexico. This was a most beautiful time for us. There is no way express the physical and emotional impact that living that close to nature had on us. We saw and experienced indescribable beauty everyday and lived at pleasure of mother nature every moment. We realized during our time on Bailarina that while we are not sure what form it would take, we also wanted a land based home as well. Unfortunately this meant back to work for while. Almost 10 years in Dalhart Texas gave us some very good friends, the amazing experience of Sherry starting and running Panhandle Academy of Ballet, and the funds to be where we are today........ "second retirement"

He enjoys: running, sailing, beauty, adventure, being in the space to truly get these things, having a partner to share all this with.

Sherry Hanshew
I grew up in Merced California cared for by my grandparents. I was quite a "girly" girl living up to the nickname given to me by my family, Little Miss Priss. But somehow in the course of my lifetime I became quite an outdoors person eager for adventures that are often difficult and dirty. I have been everything from a maid to grocery checker to elementary school teacher, but I am most proud of bringing dance to Dalhart Texas by starting the Panhandle Academy of Ballet which continues today as Lone Star Ballet. I could not have done this without Jim standing beside me as an equal partner, encouraging and facilitating me in pursuit of my dreams. Leaving our lives, accomplishments, and friends in Dalhart was a difficult decision, but we always knew that we needed to find our way back to our home on the boat and the simplicity and beauty of life there. Finding our cabin was essential in making a permanent retirement financially possible. We now have a land home that we love where we can also live simply in beauty when not on our boat. While we don't always share the same vision, we support each other in finding a place where together we can both find joy and contentment to be able to live our lives to their fullest.
She enjoys: being with Jim and Lily, adventure, backpacking, sailing, traveling, running (sometimes), reading, dancing, good wine, a nice hot bath, a good night's sleep

Lily
Lily is our 5 year old Parson's Russel Terrier and is spoiled rotten! She is very stubborn and does not mind very well, but we love her completely and unconditionally. She absolutely loves our new life in the mountains where she can run and hunt all day long. She wears a radio GPS collar so that we can find her when she wanders too far or won't come when we call her. She is becoming a great tree climber, but not good enough to catch the chipmunks that she is constantly after. She is also quite obsessive when she gets something in her head (like getting a chipmunk who is chirping at her from the safety of a hollowed out tree trunk), and will spend hours running in circles, barking, and trying to chew the tree open. It will be interesting to see how she manages the more sedentary and restrictive life on the boat. She comes with us everywhere we go. She puts up with long car rides because she can't stand to be separated from us.
She enjoys: running, hunting rodents, climbing trees, backpacking, eating, napping
