Leaving Los Muertos

Any place named Los Muertos...We love the rugged beauty of the Baja desert dropping into the clear sea, and Los Muertos certainly met our expectations. Though we enjoyed our time here and it was a comfortable anchorge, it held its share of poor luck for us. We tried to hike over the north hill to get a look at the channel and water conditions that we would soon be traveling, however it was all private property (with guard shacks along the dirt roads), so we were not able to go very far. So the next day we settled for a snorkel and hike of the south side of the bay. The snorkeling was nice, but when we rowed ashore we noticed a wild cat watching and decided it would be safer for Lily to go tide pooling along the shore instead since we had neglected to bring her leach with us. We found an interesting beach covered in broken pieces of coral, and Lily made her first attempts at "fishing" by diving into the tide pools after the tropical fish. We decided to get an early start and leave the next morning by moonlight. Unfortunately, our chain was stuck on a rock, so we needed to hold off until sunrise so that Jim could dive down to get the chain unstuck. Once we got under way, we decided to put up the mainsail in spite of the calm conditions to see if we could get some lift. It is a good thing we did, as it gave us some directional control (however slowly), when our engine stopped just outside the narrow channel between the mainland and islands. It took us about an hour drifting to finally get it started again after resolving the fuel/fuel filter issues. Since we had gotten a later start than expected, we stopped at Bonanza anchorage on Isla Espiritu Santo. We spent some time at Ensenada Grande on Isla Partida and at San Everisto. When we are not traveling to new anchorages, we spend time swimming, snorkeling, rowing to shore and hiking, meeting new people or just hanging out reading and listening to music. We can never express enough how fortunate we feel to be able to live a life full of beauty and adventure
